WTXL: American Cancer Society Looking for Ways to Pay for Treatment

The American Cancer Society held a panel discussion in Tallahassee Monday afternoon talking about ways to pay for treatment for cancer patients.

The discussion focused on step therapy and prior authorization.

Step therapy requires patients to try certain medicines before getting the one originally prescribed to them.

Prior authorization requires a doctor or patient to get approval from a health plan before getting coverage for a prescription drug.

Patient advocates say these options should not restrict treatment for those who need it.

"Patients deserve to have access to the very best medications," said Karen Moore, CEO of Moore Communications Group, "So what we hope is that all groups can come together and find middle ground to see to it that the patient gets what the patient needs."

The panel included state lawmakers and members of different medical groups and societies in Florida.
