Tallahassee Democrat: Doctors, not insurers, should make treatment decisions
Physicians do not make decisions regarding their patients lightly. We take many considerations into account when determining the right course of action for each patient.
In Florida, unfortunately, we physicians have to ask ourselves something else: Will my patient’s insurance company let my patient have the care that is best for him or her?
Insurance companies often impose policies on physicians that are not intended to improve care, but rather seem intended to reduce their own costs. This leads to burdens on physicians, higher out-of-pocket costs for patients, and – worse – barriers to quality care. It is time for this to change.
